12TH
ANNUAL WINTER WALK KICKS OFF HOLIDAY SEASON
On Saturday evening December 6, 2008 from 5 to 8 pm the
Hudson Opera House presents Winter Walk, the annual hip
street festival that kick-starts the holiday season in
historic Hudson, NY. Always held on the first Saturday in
December, this festive holiday celebration is now in its
twelfth year and still going strong.
Hudson’s main commercial street becomes a fantastic
wonderland on Winter Walk night. Many of the beautifully
decorated store windows are animated by dance, mime or
storytelling. On the street, a lumbering snowman and a
walking grandfather clock meet Victorian carolers, clowns,
and African drummers. Although the usual face painters and
balloon animals are present, Walkers will also see mammoth
parade puppets leading the Santa Parade, a Gingerbread
Witch, elves of all sizes, and even fireworks. Mr. & Mrs.
Santa Claus greet children in City Hall. Live reindeer,
Roger the Jester, a brass quartet, a bagpiper and a
stilt-walking toy soldier all vie for attention. This
fantastic mélange draws thousands of delighted visitors to
join in the fun.
The main action is from 5 to 8 pm, but in the
afternoon things start gearing up at 4th Street and below.
Winter Walkers are urged to start early for a sample of
what’s to come. Many Hudson restaurants are open for
lunch, as well as dinner.

The Crandell Theatre
-
Columbia County's oldest and largest theatre is
designed in the Spanish Style, of brick and stucco
at the cost of about $100,000 in pre-depression dollars. An
architectural gem, the Crandell has remained basically
unchanged since built in 1926 by Walter Crandell, as a vaudeville
house.
Each autumn, the Crandell is home to Film Columbia.

Professional musical
theatre in the round - May thru Sept.
1925 Route 23
Chatham NY 12037
The Mac-Haydn started on a shoestring and in a cow
barn,
and went on to prove that the area could and would
support good theatre.
Fifty professional performers, directors, designers
and tech staff come to Chatham to present seven to
eight main stage and four children’s theatre shows
each summer. The performers are both widely
experienced professionals and young hopefuls looking
for the experience and resume credits they need to
move forward in their careers. If you came to shows
on the fairgrounds,
you might have seen a talented 21 year old named Joe
Lane — he has grown up to be
Nathan Lane,
Tony award winning star.
Many others who got their start singing and dancing on
the theatre-in-the-round stage here have gone on to
Broadway, TV and movies, tours and regional theatres.
Chatham native Monica M. Wemitt just finished four
years in a feature role in Disney’s “Beauty and the
Beast”. Lovely Paige Turco most recently held a
leading role in “The Agency”. Others are
‘working in the business’ and any theatre person will
tell you that in itself Is success. The performers
rehearse one show during the day and perform another
at night, opening a new production every two weeks.
The tech staff puts in hours and hours working on the
ostumes, the sets, the music, the lights, the sound to
put the show together with the high standards that
people come from miles away to see. They are young
and eager to learn and perfect their crafts, and they
love it.
People return to The Mac-Haydn Theatre year after
year, “Because it feels like family. Chatham feels
like home”. If imitation is the sincerest form of
flattery, Mac-Haydn can glow with pride that the
county is now a center for the arts, with numerous
theatres of many types, galleries, antique centers and
more, and it all began when two women had an
impossible dream and put it together in a cow-barn in
Chatham.
Every May busses roll up the driveway, cars jostle for
parking spaces, volunteer ushers show people to their
seats, the lights go down, the music starts, the
lights come up and the laughter, applause and
appreciation begin for The Mac-Haydn Theatre,
cornerstone of theatre in
Columbia County.

DA|BA Restaurant & Bar - Hudson
Warm earth tones are
easy on the eyes and dishes like Scallops with White
Chocolate or Lamb with cherry sauce opens our palette to
explore new ways to look at the food we eat. An
amuse bouche is served prior to the first course
and opens a nice feel to what ends up being a great
meal. Our regulars relish in the small surprise and
look forward to the Chef's new creations. Reasonable
portions of fresh foods in creative and clean flavor
combinations make DA | BA a great choice for the more
adventurous eater.

Chef/Owner Daniel Nilsson

friend Executive Chef
Ola Svedman to create this
wonderful balance of fine dining set in a comfortable atmoshere.

DA|BA
Restaurant Bar - Hudson
|
|
Although DA|BA opened on Warren Street in 2006,
Hudson Valley Magazine has just awarded it their “Best
New Restaurant for 2008.” The owners like to
say their restaurant isn’t really Swedish, just two
Swedes in the kitchen. “And we do everything including
some Swedish specialties.
One of the best specialties is duck
breast that is encased in a salty meringue before
cooking. This yields an amazing tender filet with a
pleasant salty edge.
You don’t find elk chop on many menus. It is a
lamentably overlooked specialty, a cross of beef and
venison, and not at all gamy. The lamb chops are
embellished with a sauce combining white wine and
delicious little cherries.
Choosing
wines for a menu as wide ranged as this is a challenge.
DA/BA’s list is thoughtfully assembled with the food in
mind and it’s reasonable.
While DA/BA
is one of the most ambitious restaurants in the area,
owner Nilsson also wants it to be a casual hangout for
those who are not in the mood for elk chops and caramel
mousse. The flip side of the menu carries pub
grub—burgers and fries, soups and the like—with
everything under $8.
--Hudson Valley Magazine, Nov. 2008
"Terrific
choices on the menu, inventive cooking, top notch
service staff and friendly attitude. One of the best in
the
518 area code."
Also serving pub fare
including Burgers, Soups and BLT that offers comfort to our
guests and keeps them coming back for more.

In 1930, modern dance
pioneer Ted Shawn bought the farm as a retreat. Shawn
and his wife, Ruth St. Denis, were America's leading
couple of the dance. Shawn had long harbored a dream
of legitimizing the dance in America as a honorable
career for men His athletic dancers were
intent on challenging the "sissy" image of men in the
dance; they forged a new, boldly muscular style in
dance. In July 1933 the first audience made up of
45 curiosity-seekers. By the end of the week
they were turning people away. On July 9, 1942,
the Ted Shawn Theatre, the first theatre in the United
States designed specifically for dance, opened its
doors.
Jacobs Pillow
. . .
for a Dream

Today, down-home
traditions at Jacob's Pillow, such as the ringing bell
announcing that the Ted Shawn Theatre is open and
pre-curtain speeches, continue from Shawn's day. Through
careful and considered expansions of Jacob's Pillow
programs and campus, this historic site in American
dance retains the rustic ambiance of "the farm," as
Shawn called it.
So before you do another thing guys, you must sneak
across the boarder to Becket Massachusetts!
