the HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL

Hudson
Named for a fortress treasure-house in ancient Persia,
Olana was the home of Frederic Edwin Church
    (
1826-1900), one of
America's most important artists,
a student of Thomas Cole, and a major figure in the
    Hudson River School of
 landscape painting.

Frederic Church, one of the premier American landscape
painters, will forever be associated with the Hudson River
Valley, where he painted and made his home.
Immensely popular in the mid-19th century, his paintings
are characterized by a calmness and sense of hope.

Thomas Cole: Sunrise in the Clove
R

The first truly American style of landscape painting was the Hudson River School, named for the area in which
many of its adherents worked.  The school was not an academic institution but rather a loose association of
painters who worked in a similar style.  They were colleagues, friends, and supporters of each other, studying
together and often traveling together throughout New York, New England, and even as far as Europe and the
  Middle East.

The Hudson River School flourished between the mid-1830s and the mid-1870s. Its subject matter is often landscapes from
the Hudson River valley, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. However, as the
country expanded to the West, the Hudson River School artists followed. Some painted Yosemite, Yellowstone, the plains
of Nebraska, and other Western scenes. Others headed to South and Central America, painting lush tropical scenes.

Paintings of the Hudson River School are characterized by fidelity to nature; clarity of detail; skies sometimes glowing at
sunrise or sunset, sometimes shining a sunny, clear blue; nearly invisible brushstrokes; an overall feeling of tranquility; and
a presentation of the American landscape as a new Eden in a benevolent universe, blessed by God and providing an uplifting
  moral influence.

                                                              THOMAS COLE (1801-1848)
In 1825 British immigrant, Thomas Cole discovered the haunting beauty of the Catskill wilderness. His exhibition of small
paintings of Catskill landscapes came to the attention of prominent figures on the New York City art scene including Asher
  B. Durand, who became a life-long friend, and his fame spread. While he was still in his twenties, Cole was made a fellow
  of the National Academy.

During the winter of 1835-1836, Cole stayed in Catskill working on "The Course of Empire." During this period Cole began to
express strong views concerning the impact of industrial development and its negative consequences for the wild beauty of
the Catskills landscapes that were the source of inspiration for his work. The growth of the railroad by "copper-hearted
  barbarians" was of particular concern.

In November of 1836, Thomas Cole and Maria Bartow were married in the west parlor at Cedar Grove, which became Cole's
home. Many of the great painters and literary figures of the day began to visit the Coles at their Catskill home. Among the
calling cards in the Cole papers of the Albany Institute of History and Art is that of James Fenimore Cooper.

In May of 1844 Cole agreed to accept Frederic E. Church as a student in his studio. Church's father agreed to pay $300 per
year for young affluent Church's instruction. This agreement lasted until June, 1846.

Thomas Cole died in the west bedroom overlooking his beloved Catskill Mountains at 8 pm on Friday, February 11th, 1848.

                                                       FREDERIC EDWIN CHURCH (1826 - 1900)
Frederic Edwin Church, one of the premier American landscape painters, will forever be associated with the Hudson River
Valley, where he painted and made his home. Immensely popular in the mid-19th century, his paintings are characterized
by a calmness and sense of hope.

Born in 1826 in Hartford, Connecticut, Church studied for several years with Thomas Cole, widely regarded as the first
exponent of the Hudson River School of painting. Church moved to New York in 1849 and began his independent career.
Within a year he became the youngest artist ever to be elected to the National Academy of Design - a distinction that
  remains to this day.

Church traveled widely throughout his career, using his sketches of New England, South America, Europe, the Arctic, the
Middle East, and North Africa to create the transcendent landscapes that brought him fame, respect, and wealth. By the
late 1870s, severe rheumatism had largely curtailed his career, although he continued to sketch for his own enjoyment.
Church spent most of his last twenty years at his estate on the Hudson River, Olana, finally dying in New York City in 1900.
