Local Farm
Produce . . .
What's
Available?
Nestled between the foothills of the
Taconic Mountain Range and the Hudson River, Columbia County has
long been considered one of the most agriculturally important
and ecologically diverse landscapes in the Hudson River Valley.
Columbia County boasts everything imaginable that is
good and delectable from the garden, pasture
and orchard. The County’s climate is situated to enjoy the
special combination of sun, rain and temperature that combine
with the deep rich native soils of the river's flood plain to
create ideal conditions for agriculture and husbandry. The
cooling breezes of the Atlantic are drawn up, tempering the
heat, allowing for an early start and later finish to the
growing season than surrounding areas.
One finds quaint little shops filled with the best of
the surrounding country, brimming with spectacular gourmet
cheeses, honey, baked goods and products sourced from the
neighborhood. Down almost every country road farmers seasonally
put out roadside farm stands with tables and baskets laden with
absolutely fresh from the garden fruits and vegetables. The farm
stands come and go quickly as the produce reaches perfection and
then passes.
Throughout the County one finds many farms that invite you
to come in and pick your own seasonal fruits and vegetables.
They frequently farm special smaller plots filled with dozens of
varieties that you simply cannot find anywhere else. You are
welcomed into the field to select just that special tomato or to
pluck the most flavorful bean you can discover.

the County's Rural Landscapes
Columbia Land Conservancy
Farmers harvest the
night before and the morning of and bring their produce
to the farmers markets. You’ll find baskets of peaches
and apples, piles of carrots and greens, aromatic
onions, mushrooms, ruby red and golden yellow tomatoes,
aromatic herbs and fingerling potatoes, baked goods,
honey, flowers and garden plants along with nuts and
cheeses for your delight.
“Farm
country looks different these days,” said Bob Fix, a
fourth-generation fruit farmer in Livingston whose high
orchards present long views across the Hudson River to the
northern Catskills. “Still pretty, but different.”
The differences
are visible, and many of them make the county more friendly
for visitors. Agriculture alone is often not lucrative enough,
so farms lure customers with features like pies and petting
zoos. There are more farmers who grow organically, and who
grow their produce specifically for farmer’s markets locally
and in the city.
The organic
movement has taken a firm hold in Columbia County as farm
after farm convert to this new, yet centuries old, method of
farming. Row after row of baby beets and tiny carrots and
plump little lettuces are carefully nurtured to the peak of
flavor, then quickly harvested. They are destined for local
markets, popular farm stands and the most discerning eaters in
the world in New York City. Many of the farms listed below are
organic. You will need to make this determination with
the individual farm.
Because of the evolution of
its working farms, Columbia County has kept its scruffy,
genuinely rural charm, even while being “discovered” again and
again by city people. Hudson, the county seat, has tried hard
to live up to the hype. But not until recently there was no
restaurant in the whole county worth a detour. That's all
changed! (See Dining.)
Additionally, Columbia County orchards in fall are transformed
by a bounty of ripening fruit into idyllic scenes of
abundance. But times can be difficult. Meeting the demands of
wholesalers and consumers when nature has left you with flawed
merchandise is only one of a number of daunting
challenges that Columbia County farmers face.
"Far and away, the weather is one of the biggest challenges,"
says Chris Loken, owner for the past 38 years of Love Apple
Farm in Ghent.
Now go out
and enjoy picking out fresh farm produce to bring home!
And then congratulate yourself on supporting agricultural
practices that protect the Columbia County’s land and
landscape. Then drive to Chatham and have a therapeutic
chocolate cupcake at Our Daily Bread bakery, much better than
all the over-hyped cupcakes in the big city.

The focus of AFT's
work revolves around protecting a precious
resource—America's best farm and ranch land.
Founded in 1980 by a group of farmers and
conservationists concerned about the rapid loss of the
nation's farmland to development, American Farmland
Trust (AFT) is a nonprofit membership organization
dedicated to protecting our nation's strategic
agricultural resources.
Approximately half of the two billion acres of land in
America is working agricultural land. This productive
farm and ranch land is a finite resource as fertile
soils take thousands of years to develop and are
irreplaceable.

As more and more
people choose to live in the county (or own a second home here),
the very characteristics that have inspired and attracted people
to Columbia County—scenic
vistas, historic rural communities, beautiful woodlands, and
working farms--are increasingly at risk from haphazard
development.
At the request of landowners,
CLC helps families and individuals protect their land, ensuring
that their conservation vision will be upheld forever. Working
with communities and conservation groups, CLC helps implement
local conservation efforts, including fundraising, acquisition,
site planning, and management of public conservation lands for

century caring for our farm, and its important to us that the
property continue to be farmed," said Larry Benson of Shaker

Shaker View Farm received farmland protection grants

The Columbia Land Conservancy task is to work with

landscape puzzle. It prevents fragmentation, which
disrupts key wildlife corridors, impairs water and air

natural areas.
