EDUCATION

Education took its roots early in the County’s history.  The earliest known area schoolhouse (c.1736) was the Kinderhook Village School House which stood along the southern boundary of the Schemerhorn-Pruyn estate.

Columbia Academy, an early Dutch school in Kinderhook,   was opened in 1792 and was incorporated in March 1797.

The Columbia Academy was incorporated in 1824 and the present structure at 29 Albany Avenue was built in 1836. The 1843 Academy Catalogue listed courses to prepare men for college or employment in counting houses, and young ladies were offered a complete course of "solid and ornamental education". The building was sold in 1896 and was then used as a printing house for the Rough Notes, next as a knitting mill, and was purchased in 1909 by the Lindenwald Grange.

The Academy was to become one of the most notable of its kind in the state and students attending came from not only around the county but from as far away as Albany, Troy, Pittsfield, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

1778 Andrew Mayfield Carshore, a deserter from Burgoyne’s army, established an English School in Kinderhook to be known as Kinderhook Academy.

Today, education is more important than ever.
