Henry Hudson was the first European to sail up the Hudson River to what is now Columbia County in the 17th Century.  Seeing Native Indian children playing on the riverbanks of what is now Stuyvesant, he gave Kinderhook its name, "children's corner" in Dutch. From here he could see the beauty of the Catskills to the west and the Berkshires to the east.

You can still hike the same trails as Thomas Cole and other Hudson River School Painters did. The rolling fields of the western region of the county host vineyards, organic farms and apple orchards.

Columbia County boasts a wide range of historic sites. Some historic homes of note shown above are The Luykas Van Alen House and Olana.  One can see the Dutch influence in area architecture which was later mixed with English styles. (Click on Historic Sites below.)

Steeped in history, today Columbia County offers superb dining, abundant farmland, fresh farm produce, performing & visual arts, the great outdoors, and high-tech medical facilities.  It's a great place to live.
